Trader's Hub - Blog Review

Traders' HubTrader's Hub is an eclectic collection of posts by Big Daddy Richard. He was for 2 decades a foreign currency trader who worked around the world.

He posts in-depth information on a number of topics that will interest a variety of readers. He is equally comfortable with football or discussing buying a baby gift from a nice shop.

But he has also stated a goal to share some of his knowledge from his profession. Posts on that topic include "The New Gold Rush- Is It Too Late?", "Let's Trade the Currencies Together," and more.

He's currently running a large Entrecard Contest with sponsorship from several other great blogs. Among those are Mature Not Senile, and Singaporean in London which I also enjoy.

The posts are well-written in clean and clear English. This is a blog with an Alexa rating of under 100,000 (low scores are good), and there is a reason for that. This is a blog with substance. Check it out!

Microworkers - Great Concept, Needs Better Moderation

Microworkers is a great concept! The idea is that you complete tasks that are worth anywhere from a penny to sometimes a couple of dollars. The tasks are usually short, and your account is credited when the member who posted (and paid for) the task approves it. Cashout is by PayPal, Moneybookers or check, and the minimum is only $9.

As soon as you join you get $2 for free, which can only be used to start a campaign of your own (to get people to do something for you). I thought this was going to be great, and actually made $1.15 yesterday.

But... there are a number of inconsistencies, and what I consider garbage offers. Each campaign must be approved before it goes live. In the guidelines it says you cannot pay people to click ads on your site (this IS a violation of the rules of places like AdSense), yet there is a suggested price for such a request and there are assignments which ask for that.

There are a lot of requests to sign up for various sleazy offers underneath people that are just going to fill your e-mail with spam... who needs that for a few pennies. The estimated time to complete many of the offers is also too low. If one actually wants to read terms and decide if what you are asked to sign up for it will take more than 5 minutes.

My first campaign was just turned down. I asked people to Stumble a post on one of my blogs for a nickel. They said that was too little. Yet, there is an approved offer to write a review of a blog for only a dime. I have to say that I don't think someone is paying attention.

At this point I would recommend it with reservations. Choose the offers you are willing to complete carefully.

Compare Hotel - Easily Find the Best Deal

CompareHotel.com.my is a great little application. On the home page there are instant links to a number of popular destination cities, or you can enter any city of interest, with potential travel dates.

In just seconds you will have a listing of hotel rooms. These can then be sorted by: Popularity, Price, Stars, Name, or Distance from the center of the city.

Not sure where you want to go? You can also browse by by city, country, or hotel name. Despite the large amount of information that must be in that database, the search results load very quickly, making this a very attractive site to search for information.

Once you click on a hotel, you can get basic information, and then more details like check in and out times, and about the neighborhood, or see a Google map. There may be a picture posted. Users can enter reviews for hotels. Previous reviews can be seen. Popular hotels may have several reviews, while remote locations could use some input.

Measuring the Size for a Camera Lens Cap

Ever since I posted about the need to replace the lens cap on the Canon Powershot SX10IS I've been getting a lot of hits from searches about how to measure for a lens cap. So I decided that I need to try to figure that out.

Lens caps are sized by millimeters, mm. So first you need to find a ruler that has metric measurements. This isn't too hard, even in the US, most rulers have metric on one side.

For a snap on cap, the best fitting kind, you need to measure the inside of the raised ring around the lens. Since the markings at the very end of a ruler are less accurate, its easiest to place the 1 just inside the edge of the ring. Then measure the diameter to the inside of the other side of the ring. Don't forget to subtract the 1!

That said, I'm not sure how accurate this process is. The cap that fits this camera is clearly marked 52mm. Yet the inside of the ring seems to measure 51mm. However, standard cap sizes are 27mm, 28mm, 30mm, 34mm, 37mm, 39mm, 40.5mm, 43mm, 46mm, 49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm and 86mm. So unless you think that your camera has some special proprietary size you should be safe to order the one that is closest to your measurement.

The Collapse of Entrecard Traffic

Now that the dust has settled a bit after Entrecard introduced paid ads, what is the condition of what is left of the once successful traffic exchange? Many popular bloggers left EC completely.

In my opinion, the site may be more financially viable, but as a source of traffic for blogs (its original purpose) it has become all but useless. I maintain four blogs with Entrecard widgets, and used to receive about 50 visits a day to each through EC widgets. This varied somewhat, in relation to how many other EC sites I visited.

Now, I receive only 5-10 visits each day through Entrecard. Each of my blogs has tumbled to about 50% of its former value in EC credits. I have chosen not to display paid ads on two of them, and will accept some paid ads on the other two. The only blogs that seem to have retained their original value are some of the ones which were already in the top few spots in each category.

In all honestly, I have to admit that I, myself, am doing less surfing too. I am much more likely to come to dead ends now... recently one EC site has flooded the widgets with paid ads so that their "card" shows up on about every other blog. This only makes me want to never click on their ad.

While I met some of my most faithful readers and favorite bloggers through Entrecard surfing, unless a whole new generation of EC users signs on and discovers the pleasure of exploring new blogs by surfing widgets, you might as well join a few traffic exchange sites and just pay for page views.

In the past few days I've been trying to drop on more EC cards. Perhaps some other people will revive the practice as well.

Does Shared Reviews Have a Future?

Shared Reviews has been around for almost two years, and after a hiatus of being able to pay writers, they are ready to begin revenue sharing again. All back payments owed to members have been made.

The site is committed to presenting unique, personal, and ethical reviews. People who think they can make a quick dollar by copying reviews or product information from other sites are routed out quite quickly by members who are diligent to check for plagiarism. Members have a real stake in the success of the site.

With the recent demise of Ciao, many of those members have come to Shared Reviews. Part of Ciao's failure was due to "gangs" of cheaters. Hopefully Shared Reviews can quickly identify and block the problem users.

How one earns money there is rather complex, and those who want to succeed need to read the User Guide.

But, in a nutshell, one writes reviews and also votes on the value of reviews that other people have written. In any given month the top several reviews in any sub-category will earn cash for both the writers and the people who voted for them.(For July 2009, it will be the top 3 spots.) One big change is that the amount available to be earned each month will be announced at the BEGINNING of the month. For example, $25 per sub-category.

That amount will then be allocated on a percentage scale to writers of and voters for the top spots. Earnings will not appear in real time in your profile. They are calculated at the end of each monthly cycle.

It has been a tough nine months, but Shared Reviews is to be commended for not simply folding and defaulting on all the back payments. Now they are ready to to continue to provide good, personal reviews of products, and to reward monetarily those who write them.

Traffic Exchange Business - Second Thoughts

I've been a member of Traffic Exchange Business for a couple of months. As I said earlier you can quickly work your way up to a nice point level on their site.

However, there is one fatal problem with the program. They want a splash page that displays in their frame. That means unless people click through from the splash page (or text links or banners) that you don't actually get traffic on your site. So that's not too helpful.

The new owners seem to be focused on other pursuits at the moment. Not much is happening at Traffic Exchange Business.

Trying Out Clix Sense

Yesterday I joined one of the sites where you are paid to click on advertisements. It's an interesting concept... companies pay people to look at their ads.

It seems too good to be true, but I decided to give one of the sites a try and see how it goes. I initially joined ClixSense for free. However, I found that I could only earn 28 cents unless I upgraded to a Pro account. If I did that, there would be over 500 clicks available to me. Each click is worth a penny. Of course they say that there are some that are worth more, but the best I've seen yet is one that was worth 2 cents.

Well, a Pro upgrade was only $10 for a year. I could potentially make half of that back just in the offers available right now. So, I did it. I was able to pay by credit card through Google checkout.

Each site opened must be viewed for 30 seconds. Pages open in a frame with a countdown timer.

Payout is by paper check only. Minimum payout is $10, but there is a $3 check processing fee. If you look carefully, you can find how to reset the payout amount higher so that that $3 fee doesn't hurt so much! If you don't reset it and your balance goes over $10 you will automatically be paid on the 10th of the month.

So far, I've clicked on 342 links, for $3.43 in my account. I don't know how often the links refresh. I'm down to being told that there are 154 available to click. There are many repeats of the same links, so one person is shown the same page some multiple number of times.

Of course, there are perks for having people sign up underneath you, so if it appeals to you, why not click my link? It's a really easy way to make a few dollars. Actually, one of the links ultimately led me to the alumni page of my high school. That was quite a shock!

How To Feed Content to Twitter

Are you wondering how to have your blog posts show up in your Twitter Feed? It's not as difficult as you might think.

Go to twitterfeed.com and log in. It will give you a screen that says "An application would like to connect to your account," and you have to choose "Allow" in order to add a feed. Next you will be re-directed back to the application (twitterfeed). When the page re-loads you will be at a form where you can add a new feed to your Twitter account. You do have to get the URL for an RSS feed. This can be from the Atom feed at the bottom of Blogger blogs, or a Feedburner feed, etc.

If you want to add more than one feed, just used the button to add another feed at the bottom of the page.

TrafficNowFire Higher Levels- Inbreeding?

Traffic Now Fire is a link clicking program that sends traffic to your site and has the potential to earn money.

I have continued to explore how one can earn more with this site. I've finally found a page that explains more, but I don't think that I want to get involved with this type of site too deeply. It's one of the type of site that I call "inbred."

There are two types of points: regular points and ranking points

Regular points
One can earn regular points by clicking on links and voting those sites up or down. If you complete member offers you get a lot of points, and also you get points when people you refer sign up under you. Regular points can be traded for bold or icon studded links, banner ads, or guaranteed surfing time on your links. They can be cashed out at a rate of 25,000 for 25 cents.

Ranking points
Ranking points have more value. These are awarded to regular users of TrafficNowFire. You get 0.1 points every time you log in. You get a point every time you complete a member offer. You get a point for posting 5 links a day (but you can't do this unless you trade points, or already have a higher rank). Actually about all they are good for is to give you access to better offers to sign up for.

Member Offers
Member offers are things that one signs up for, and these give you ranking points. Members can also create offers for other people to sign up for. The more offers you sign up for, the more ranking points you get. However, you also usually have to have at least 3 ranking points to sign up for any of them. The one that I was eligible for (with 1 ranking point), is a "guaranteed income for life" scheme. It's a pyramid scam. You have to pay $20 each to 3 people, and then just wait for the $20 bills to come to your account.

I call these sites inbred, because it's all based on a bunch of people completing each others offers. All the offers are for money-making schemes; it's not really a site to promote blogs or sites that have some independent purpose. The only way to really accumulate points is to sign up for offers.

Your odds of doing better are greatly increased if you pay for a Pro Membership.

If you are comfortable with the sleaziness of the whole process you can participate. I think some of the schemes are illegal in the US. I'll just use it for some traffic generation, and forget about trying to make a few dollars.

Diopter Adjustment for Canon SX10IS

I like to use the viewfinder rather than the screen for picture taking on hikes. Using the screen uses up battery power, and I sure don't want to carry too many extra batteries while backpacking. But everyone has complained about how poor and fuzzy the view through the viewfinder on the Canon Powershot SX10IS looks.

Well, that is easy to fix! There is a little thumb wheel to the left of the viewfinder. Just rotate it until the picture comes into focus for you.

The Importance of Logo Design - Guest Post from LogoInn

(Ben Johnson, of LogoInn requested a guest post on "Why it's better to spend some time on logo design before going online." I am happy to present his article here. -JHY)

Benefits of spending a reasonable amount of time on logo designing

Logo plays a key role in marketing and branding of any kind. Therefore, the task of development and designing cannot be taken lightly. One of the steps that you have to avoid to your logo is the need to make sure that you fully follow a meaningful design process before you present your logo to the public at large. Make sure to put considerable amount of time on logo design process before going to make it live.

Do understand the importance of your corporate logo

It is a proven fact that your logo is the heart and soul of your overall, comprehensive marketing, advertising and promotional plan. With this fact in mind, it is absolutely crucial that you devote the time and effort necessary to ensure that you have designed and developed a logo that truly will serve the interests of your business well.

Understanding the importance of your logo, you must ensure that you devote a reasonable amount of money to have your logo designed. And, you need to ensure that you dedicate an appropriate amount of time to design and develop your logo and to fully vet your logo once the design process is completed.

Make sure to hire a professional logo design company

Now that you have been presented with some facts to consider pertaining to the importance of your logo, you will want to take the next step and contemplate the importance of hiring a professional, qualified logo design firm with a proven track record. In the final analysis, you cannot trust the design and development of your logo to anything less than a true professional.

In seeking a professional logo design company to assist you with your own brand and image development, you will want to ensure that you select a provider that understands the needs and objectives of your business, an effective firm that appreciates the nature of your product or services.

Test Your Logo before going live

One of the most important steps that you must take when it comes to the design and ultimate development of your business's logo and identity is to test market your logo before you “go live” with it in a broadly public setting. You cannot afford to have a logo that “doesn't work” put forth to the public at large – online or otherwise – only to learn that the logo does not have the desired effects and consequences.

The test marketing process does not have to be complicated ... but it must be intelligent. You need to have an appropriate segment of individuals who you believe accurately are part of the market niche you are targeted look at and respond to your logo. You cannot merely have your friends and associates review your logo before you start using it in public. If you rely only on people who know you or with whom you have an association, you will not be able to obtain accurate information and feedback about the logo itself.

In some cases, by hiring a professional logo design firm, that company will be able to assist you in test marketing your logo before you put it into use. This represents yet another service that a professional logo design company can provide to you and your business.

In summary, by understanding the true and enduring importance of your logo you will appreciate the need for being thoughtful and deliberate not only in the manner in which you have that branding piece designed but also in the way you bring it forth onto the market. By paying attention to and by following the suggestions outlined for you in this article you will be able to have designed and introduced onto the market a logo that will serve your business very well on all levels.

Ping Your Blog or Website Free

To "ping" your blog means that the content is pushed to a server that notes that your blog has new material on it. That means that blog search engines and news aggregators will know that there is fresh content.

Pingler will send your blog address to 91 ping services (a great many of them are Google in various countries), and you don't even have to sign up. You can use the service as a guest.

However, if you do choose to sign up, and purchase a premium account for $2.99 a month, you are allowed to store up the details of up to 25 websites in your account. These sites will be automatically pinged every three days. A premium account not only saves you the hassle of having to ping each of your sites manually, it ensures that pinging is performed frequently and in a timely manner.

I just head over there and submit my sites for free every few days.

Free Advertising Forum

The Free Advertising Forum is free. Really. You can post links to your web site. It's a basic forum software.

There are only a few rules:
  • Do not post anything offensive. We will delete anything we find inappropriate.
  • Do not post the same ad in more then 2 categories. We will delete over-posting.
  • Do not spam members with Private Messages.
  • Please find the category that suits your ad the best and post it there.

No tricky stuff, no clicking, just a free link. I like it.

There are categories for businesses, blogs, web sites, traffic generation sites, marketing, referrals, work-at-home, and known scams. (And there's a chat category)

That said, I posted links to two of my blogs there a couple of days ago and have gotten no hits at all, except one from me to be sure that it would show as coming from that site. On the other hand, I haven't spent time there getting to know anyone yet.

Tip for Cleaning Stainless Steel

I've been using baking soda for years to clean my stainless steel toaster and canisters, but I've learned a new trick that makes it work even better.

To clean a stainless steel sink, sprinkle baking powder on the sink surfaces, then pour or spray vinegar over it. Cleans that sink up great! Even took the brown stains off the strainer basket!

The difference doesn't show as much in the pictures as the reality, nevertheless, from top to bottom: the dingy sink, sprinkled with baking soda, bubbling with vinegar sprinkled on that, and finally, after easily rubbing down with a dish cloth. I applied a little "elbow grease" on the worst spots, but it was really very easy.

Lens Cap Size for Canon SX10IS

I have previously written about the poor quality lens cap that comes with the Canon Powershot SX10IS Camera. I promptly lost that one, and then another one that we had around that fit.

There is nowhere in the specifications that it tells what size lens cap fits that camera! Measuring was inconclusive... where exactly does one measure? Outside the lens rim? Inside the lens rim? Pretty hard to order a cap without knowing the size, and we have no camera shop in our town any more...

My husband ransacked his camera bag and we found a cap that fits. It also stays on well. And, it is labeled! The size lens cap that fits the Canon Powershot SX10IS is a 52mm cap.

TrafficNowFire Revisted

Traffic Now Fire is a link clicking program that sends traffic to your site and has the potential to earn money.

A few days ago, I signed up at this site. Much to my surprise it has resulted in some quality traffic. Every time I post a link (at my level I am allowed one link post a day), I have gotten over 20 hits in the next 24 hours. Now, most of those have to be low value, click and run, I understand that.

There is SOME incentive for people to read a little bit. If they vote a site up or down, they get a few extra points. In theory this means that they might look at the site for a few seconds.

But I have been quite shocked to receive two comments on my blogs where people said they found me through Traffic Now Fire.

I have been clicking and voting on a few links every day, and posting my one link. I haven't even got enough points to earn 25 cents yet, but I have generated traffic. And I do believe that one needs to get people going by a site. Then it's up to me to get them to come back.

Also, I have read several blog posts by real people who say that they have indeed been paid by Traffic Now Fire. If I come across them again, I'll add them here (forgot to bookmark.)

Kiva Goes International... er... US National

Kiva has expanded their reach today by loaning money to entrepreneurs in the United States. Previously, their success in providing small business loans around the world has become renowned.

Kiva does not loan money directly. However, they work with partner organizations which identify valid requests for micro-loans. Their success has been in making it easy for anyone, via the internet, to donate as little as $25 to help someone else. 98% of all loans are repaid.

I personally have had a Kiva account for about two years. I first loaned money to help a man open a grocery store in Cambodia. That loan was repaid, and now I am helping a woman in Viet Nam open a tailoring shop. I don't have much money myself, but I love helping other people who really appreciate it!

You earn no interest; this is not an "investment" in that sense. It is an investment in the lives of people. You may donate to cover administration costs if you wish.

And now, people in the US can receive Kiva funding. The United States Field Partners currently are Opportunity Fund and ACCION USA. Kiva's web site states, "Kiva is a global organization and seeks to provide working capital to entrepreneurs all over the world. Poverty exists in every country, including the United States, and Kiva hopes to address poverty wherever it exists."

I encourage anyone with a desire to help others to check out Kiva.

Karteset- Basic Card File for $15

There are a lot of groups of information that we need to store for our lives that don't require a full-fledged data base. In fact a large db program just gets in the way of handling that information quickly and efficiently. A good example is a family address book. Maybe you'd just like to put a note on one entry that says "Paul's sister-in-law," or "ate dinner with them, Christmas 2001." A database forces you to set up fields for extra notes just to do what used to be so simple with a card file or Rolodex.

So I went looking for a very simple card file program for my computer. For only $15, Karteset is a great answer. In fact, you can try it for 30 days for free, before paying even that small price.

Note in the screen shot above that you can set a heading for each card, and add whatever kind of information you want to the body of the card. At the bottom is a space for categories. This is where Karteset shines. You can put any card into multiple categories, making it act like a simple data base. For example, in an address file, perhaps your son is also your auto mechanic. His card could go in two categories (which you create- as many as you want): Family and Services. In a recipe file a card could be put in categories for Dessert, Cherries, Chocolate, etc. It also allows you to search for any piece of text throughout the file. Subcategories are also allowed.

Karteset has few bells and whistles. But you can change the font, both size and color, as it is RTF based.

I've been using it for over a year. There are only a couple of things about it that are annoying. It tabs from the header to the category next, where I would prefer it to tab to the body of the card. Perhaps more importantly it does not automatically save cards or edits. You have to remember to save every change.

However, for the price, I am really happy with this little piece of software

Win in June from John is Fit

John at "John is Fit" is holding a great contest during the month of June. Visit his June Weight Loss Blog Contest to see all the details.

There are seven prize levels and the top three spots are for cold hard cash! First place winner will get $250. That's a chuck of change these days. 2nd place = $75, 3rd place = $25. 4th and 5th places get books about staying fit, and 6th and 7th get a set of exercise cards. The cash prizes will be paid through PayPal.

The winners will be selected at random, and he promises to video the drawing to demonstrate the impartiality. The contest runs through June 30. Hop on over to June Weight Loss Blog Contest to see how to enter.

John also writes product reviews on equipment or products he has used in his extended quest to improve his fitness. I've wondered for a long time if pedometers are accurate or worth the money. He has reviewed several, and gives the highest rating to the Omron HJ-720ITC Pocket Pedometer. I guess they've come a long way from the one I got by sending in box tops and 50 cents to cover shipping. Of course you'll need more than a few box tops to buy this digital beauty that speaks to your computer. A couple of years ago McDonalds was giving away pedometers with their dinner salads. I really hate the Mc-ing of America, but I bought a salad just to get the adult happy-toy. It actually worked pretty well for a while.

Truth is, I just do my daily dog walk and my hiking and I seem to walk enough. I like to walk!

Vinefire is a House of Cards

Vinefire is a pay-to-click program that claims amazing payment rates, as much as 90 cents per click for certain links.

However, when one reads the fine print, you may get a lot of cash accumulated in your account, but the whole scheme depends on some larger company buying them out so that they can actually pay the bill. To be honest, they are making this clear, but I wonder how many people actually read that far?

They cleverly state that they retain the option to pay some people (anyone they choose) before they are acquired, but they do not promise any payments unless they are purchased.

This may be a way to get clicks to your site with a nebulous promise of cash in the future, but don't be misled into thinking that the cash will definitely be forthcoming.

How Do You Wasa?

Traffic Now Fire

Traffic Now Fire is a link clicking program that sends traffic to your site and has the potential to earn money.

I signed up and clicked a number of links. I put in the one link per day that new basic members are allowed. It did result in several clicks to my site.

You receive points for clicking on other sites. If you vote (either up or down) for those sites you get a few more points. The number of points depends on the type of membership you have. These points can be traded in for cash at the rate of 25000 points for 25 cents.

My initial assessment is that you would have to spend way too much time clicking to get enough money to make it worthwhile for earning money. But every time I post a link I instantly get at least 6-8 hits through to my site. I will probably click a few links every once in a while and add a link to one of my sites.

Free Rice and Word Fun!

Help end world hunger Here's a great way to have some word fun, stretch your brain and help feed someone- all for FREE!

Free Rice shows you a word and you try to match the definition from four choices, in English. The game quickly adapts to the level of your vocabulary skills. If you get one wrong the correct answer is shown. If you keep playing after you get a few wrong those words will appear again soon giving you the chance to reinforce their correct meaning.

For every answer you get correct 10 grains of rice will be donated to help fight world hunger. I know this doesn't sound like much, but the grains multiply quickly. I just played this morning, for only a few minutes, and made it to 160 grains. I just weighed that many grains and it was 0.2 of an ounce, enough to register on my kitchen scale.
