Creating a Category Tree for Blogger - Part 4

Part 4 - How to Code the Tree

I suggest beginning to build your tree in a text editor such as Notepad. Once you understand what you are doing, then you can cut and paste the code into an HTML widget.

Use your outline to guide the build. In fact, you can paste that outline right into Notepad, and then add the links around the words/phrases you have chosen.

Call Labels or Search Results
There are two basic choices of ways to pull content from your blog, and those go back to The Difference Between Search and Labels in Blogger.
• You can call all posts which have been given a certain label.
• Or you can call all posts which contain a certain word or phrase.

Using the choice to call a label is preferred, but there might be times when you would want to call a search.

Write the Code
Here is how to call all the posts with a certain label, for example "spam."
<a href="http://yourblogurl.blogspot.com/search/label/spam">spam</a>

Just use that format and substitute whatever label you are listing for the word "spam," and your own blog's url for "yourblogurl.blogspot.com" You can make it so that each result will open in a new tab/window by inserting the 'target="_BLANK"' code:
<a target="_BLANK" href="http://yourblogurl.blogspot.com/search/label/spam">spam</a>

To call a search use this code:
< href="http://yourblogurl.blogspot.com/search?q=spam">spam </a>
with the adaptations noted above.

To move the text to the next line (like hitting return) add <BR>

To make a heading bold, surround the text with <B>Make this text Bold</B>

Create Hierarchy
There are three ways to create hierarchy for your tree. You can use an unordered list (with bullets), and ordered list (with numbers), or manually add bullets with the desired number of space you want to indent each level.
• For bullets with the default indent (may be wider than you want), surround your entire list with <UL>Your list</UL>, then begin each item with <LI>
• For numbered items use the same structure, but substitute OL for the UL
• To manually place bullets use &bull; , you can use the space bar to put one space before and after the bullet, if you want more spaces use &nbsp;  for each desired space.

Example
If you look at the graphic in this post, it's the code for the first section of the category tree in the right column. I've highlighted the code for the title line "Blog Analysis" in red. You can see that I chose to also make the title a link for a label that includes all the posts from the whole category, and that I've chosen to make it bold.

You can see that the subheadings are bulleted by manually adding my own bullets.

Once you have gotten a good start on coding your tree, you can place in in your blog. More on that in Part 5- Where Should I Put a Category Tree?.

Breaking a Blog Post in Blogspot

Did you know that it is incredibly simple to break any post in a blogspot blog, any place that you want to?

Did you ever wonder how bloggers set up a post so that some of the text shows, but they you have to click "Read more" to continue? Any place you want, simply put in the line <!--more-->

The break and the link will show up when the blog is viewed.

Are You TItled?

Is your blog one that doesn't have a title showing in the tab bar? Most blogs create this automatically when you initially set it up. Maybe you started your blog before you thought up a name. Maybe you just have no idea why the name doesn't show. It's really easy to fix!

You do need to go to the page that allows you to edit your HTML code. In Blogger that is under Layout / Edit HTML. Click within the box where the code appears and search for the word "title." (without the quotes) That word may appear quite a few times, but you need to look for the one within the header-wrapper. In blogger that looks like this:

<div id='header-wrapper'>

<b:section class='header' id='header' maxwidgets='1'>

<b:widget id='Header1' locked='true' title='Just Throw Money (Header)' type='Header'/>

</b:section>

</div>

I highlighted the title in red, only for emphasis. You should be sure that your looks like this (in blogger), only with your own blog name. In other platforms, just follow the code as presented, but add your own title.

Adding a Custom Icon to Blogspot Blogs

Due to having to build a new program about my hikes before last night, and the well-oiled workings of Murphy's laws, I got very little sleep and got behind on blogging. So here are three days of income reporting.

Adding a Custom Icon to Blogspot Blogs

I've known how to do this for quite a while, but finally got around to adding a custom icon to my blogs. You will now notice a little shark in the tab of all my blogs, and also at the end of the search bar.

It's good to have a custom icon in several sizes. Any program that looks for them will automatically choose the correct size. If you have an icon, it is easy to add the code to Blogspot blogs. Your icon can be a .gif or .ico file. Here's how. (Remember that it's always a good idea to save a copy of the template that is working properly before you go making changes!)

Go to Dashboard / Layout / Edit HTML

Look for the tag </head> (it's almost at the bottom, oddly enough, for most templates)

Insert the following line of code in front of the </head> tag.

<link href="http://the_URL_of_your_icon_here.gif" rel="shortcut icon" type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon"></link>
   of course, be sure to substitute the address for your icon in the line

Hit Preview at the bottom of the screen before you save your template to be sure it is working properly.

Save the template.

That's all there is to it! If you need a custom icon, I can build you one for $10 one size. Add $5 for additional sizes. The ideal is to have 16x16, 24x24 and 32x32 icons. Follow the link below to find examples of custom icons I have built for myself and others.

Three Column Success

Well, as you can see, I now have 3 columns. They are not fancy, but they work. That is more than I can say for instructions from several other sites. The set that worked was found at The Cutest Blog on the Block. I sort of wish the article column was on the left and the two narrower columns on the right, but for now, I'll accept this!

I'll continue to work on adding more features, but this is an accomplishment for today.

Templates for Blogger

I find that I really have quite a few topics that I want to talk about. Perhaps for another day I'll talk about why I have stuck with blogger / blogspot platforms.

Meanwhile, I have been trying to find three-column templates for blogger that actually work. I have found several sources that don't seem to. The first one is BlogspotTemplate.com. They have 14 designs for blogger with three columns. I can't get any of them to work. They consistently produce errors that say the code cannot be parsed.

I know just enough javascript to work my way out of some problems, and alter some applications. But I have no idea how to take a huge block of code and figure out what is wrong.

I've found a site that explains how to make blogger templates into 3-columns. I'm going to give it a try. I'll report how well it works.
